The ancient Greek coin set in this elegant necklace dates to the 2nd century BCE and celebrates Athena, one of the most important Greek goddesses and patroness of wisdom and war. The deity, with her iconic crested Corinthian helmet, is featured prominently on the front of the coin, known as a tetradrachm. The reverse of the coin depicts the figure of Nike, the winged goddess of victory, holding her signature wreath for crowning the horses of victorious charioteers. The pure silver coin was minted in the city of Side in the Pamphylia region and is set in a later 18K gold bezel and chain.

According to Greek mythology, Athena sprang full-grown and armored from the forehead of Zeus, the king of the gods. She is the patron of war, handicraft and practical reason and the protectress of Greek cities. The Parthenon in Athens, one of the most important Greek temples, was dedicated to Athena in return for her gift of the olive tree to her namesake people, the Athenians.
